Heuliez realizes fast-turnaround testing with LMS Test.Lab

Press Release Date24 Aug 2006

Tier-one automotive supplier standardizes its new NVH testing facility on LMS testing systems

Leuven, Belgium - LMS International announced today that LMS Test.Lab has been selected by the French tier-one automotive supplier Heuliez as the standard platform for its new in-house noise and vibration testing facility. The company designs and manufactures complete cars, convertible roofs, doors, trunks and other major car body systems for several European car OEMs. Heuliez recently created an in-house NVH testing facility to eliminate the bottleneck of packing and shipping prototypes for testing at external facilities.

According to Damien Faucher, manager of the Testing department at Heuliez, one of the primary benefits of the LMS Test.Lab system is the complete application coverage of key NVH testing and engineering applications. In cooperation with its OEM customers, Heuliez takes complete responsibility in minimizing interior noise, optimizing passenger comfort and shaping the sound of the vehicle. With LMS Test.Lab, Heuliez can handle all the related NVH engineering tasks within single testing platform.  Working within a unified system in this manner saves time as well as lowers costs and reduces chances for errors throughout the process.

The scalability and modularity of the LMS test systems allow Heuliez engineers to use them in their on-site test chamber as well as for mobile measurements on test tracks. The company’s engineers also valued LMS Test.Lab’s intuitive user interface and the embedded process-centric approach, which enables them to consistently and systematically capture all the sequential steps of routine NVH testing assignments.  LMS Test.Lab provides features for easy preparation of elaborate tests and capabilities for extensive on-line processing which allow Heuliez to achieve high productivity levels in mobile testing.

“In the area of modal testing, the LMS PolyMAX algorithm allows us to automatically identify resonant frequencies to provide fast and accurate results that otherwise would require laborious operator interpretation,’” commented  Damien Faucher. “Such fast-turnaround capabilities accelerate the evaluation of design modifications involving changes in mass, stiffness or materials, for example.  With iterations performed so quickly, our engineers not only save time but also can more readily arrive at the best design that satisfies all critical requirements.”

Heuliez engineers also benefit from LMS capabilities in performing analysis in real time, with results displayed as tests are being run.  On-line processing and visualization of data through waterfalls, color maps and order analysis provide valuable insight into a product’s noise and vibration characteristics during the test run. This capability enables engineers to pinpoint the root cause of problems on the spot and to immediately validate the quality of the test run.

According to Faucher, faster testing turnarounds definitely will shorten their product development cycle and help optimize designs more readily, which are crucial business advantages in meeting demanding OEM schedules, quality standards and product requirements. “We selected the LMS system because the hardware and software are tightly integrated within a single system, and because LMS is widely recognized as the NVH technology leader in the automotive industry,” says Faucher.  “We strongly value the way LMS operates.  They don’t just sell us the tools but are closely familiar with our applications and truly partner with us in bringing NVH testing expertise in-house.”
