LMS OPTIMUS Rev. 3.0 Released - Computer-Aided Design Optimization Made Easier

Press Release Date1 Aug 2000

Product engineering today, is about quickly optimizing a design for performance, quality, cost and delivery. The release of LMS OPTIMUS 3.0 makes the design optimization process more efficient and effective than ever before. OPTIMUS 3.0 works with all major mechanical engineering software programs (structural, dynamics, acoustics, fatigue, etc.)  to enable the user to understand how changes affect their designs. OPTIMUS automatically identifies the design’s sensitivity to a range of parameters. The new version is easier to operate, faster to solution, and more interactive during the analysis and the results review.

"The release of OPTIMUS 3.0 strengthens the LMS strategy of delivering CAE and Testing solutions to improve the engineering process. Typically, engineers use a variety of different CAE programs to evaluate their designs. OPTIMUS understands the results of other engineering programs and leads the user to the best possible design alternative", states Tom Curry, chief marketing officer, LMS International.

LMS OPTIMUS Rev 3.0 features a new and enhanced network display so that parameters can be grouped together to simplify the display for large sets of variables. There is a more flexible and interactive pathway routing to avoid clutter. You can zoom in/out, copy & paste, snap to grid, and perform many similar useful operations. Up-front checking has been improved so that ranges, values, names, data sets and consistency can be validated before the design of Experiments (DOE) is launched. The DOE optimization process is now more interactive so that you can view progress, interrupt and interact with the analysis as needed.

The enhanced OPTIMUS 3.0 DOE module features an extensive set of methodologies such as full and fractional Factorials, Taguchi, Placket Burman... enabling  the design space to be captured with a minimum number of runs.  Improvements to local optimization methods have cut the convergence time to the nearest ’hill or valley.’ New global optimization methods, including two types of evolution methods and an advanced simulated annealing algorithm, find the optimum point even in the presence of multiple (local) maxima, saddles, or minima.

The DOE process is now more efficient as data generated by one analysis can now be  reused by any other. This means a point in the design space that is evaluated once, need never be calculated in a subsequent sequence. This minimizes the amount of data that has to be generated, and saves a tremendous amount of time.

As a boost to the already fast algorithms employed by OPTIMUS 3.0, engineers are now able to schedule simulation tasks to run over a parallel network of workstations and/or PCs. Different tasks can paralleled using different schemes to take advantage of the number of analysis licenses available - a method sometimes referred to within the industry as "fine grain parallelization". Finally, post-processing has been extended allowing interactive design space exploration, providing the engineer improved data access and critical insights into the design.
