LMS Releases Pimento Rev 4.40 for Sound Power Measurements

Press Release Date13 Dec 2002

LMS announces the release of Rev 4.40 of LMS Pimento, the laptop-sized portable analyzer. This new version of Pimento contains a module that is specifically designed for sound power measurement for manufacturers, who must qualify their products to regulatory noise standards under EC/2000/14 directive for outdoor equipment. This standard applies to lawn tractors, compressors, hedge trimmers, and more. LMS Pimento has been designed as a compact, lightweight and robust testing system, and is therefore easy to transport and set up for outdoor measurements. In addition to the standard outdoor measurements, users of Pimento can also do in-depth noise & vibration analysis for identifying the root cause of noise problems.

Under the European Directive EC/2000/14 on noise emission in the environment from outdoor equipment, a label must be affixed to equipment stating that the product’s guaranteed sound power level is legal, without which the equipment may not be sold in the European Union. The procedures and norms for sound power acquisition setup and testing are governed in the ISO 3744 standards. Manufacturing companies need to perform their measurements according to this standard to qualify for meeting the EC/2000/14 directive. The new LMS Pimento Sound Power module was developed specifically to help engineers make measurements following the ISO 3744 standards that enables users to make the faultless sound power measurements that officially qualify their goods as to sound power levels.

The LMS Pimento system can operate in an expert mode for predefining measurements and an operator mode for executing measurements. User guidance starts with selecting and setting up the right equipment, taking the measurements, and finishes by producing the reports that the standards require. The software offers automatic feedback on measurement quality and indicates any necessary corrective action. Visual Basic lets users create simplified and customized interfaces to control measurements, processing and reporting, or to implement an automatic sequencing of multiple measurement steps. Users can automate the necessary processing on the data, and the reporting in Microsoft Office Word or Excel using standard (Visual Basic) macros. Final reports are included for the ISO3744 and EC/2000/14 directives, but users can adapt these to their own reporting needs – as for meeting bylaws or labor codes.

The EU directive prescribes a regular 6-microphone setup. To support this, LMS Pimento can handle 12 microphones or 24 ICP channel setups. Along with the 24-channel option, the onboard DSP gives you the speed you need to do the 3rd octave calculations in real-time. This saves the time and prevents the mistakes inherent to re-cabling, re-recording and re-processing when a test is done in several steps. Only LMS Pimento offers a standard sound power analyzer that can acquire data and show results in realtime for 6 to 24 channels simultaneously.

But most manufacturers want to do more than just qualify the sound power measurement. They also want to analyze the root cause of certain noise problems, and understand how they have to change their designs to avoid them. In addition to the software module for sound power, engineers can expand Pimento needed. Options exist for many types of NVH troubleshooting and test needs; impact, spectral analysis, time data recorder and analysis, operational deflection shapes, etc.

About LMS Pimento

Pimento weighs less than 5kgs (11lbs) fully loaded, with a footprint the same size as a laptop. It was designed to survive the rigors of life in the field, and runs on AC, DC or even its own internal battery – making it ideal for engineering on the move. Pimento has enough performance to handle any sound and vibration task: 4 to 24 channels with 24 bit ADCs for the highest quality measurements; up to 40kHz bandwidth per channel (on input module MSP424), over 1Megasample/sec in sustained data throughput; a tacho to track rotating machinery, auto industry CAN-bus support and a 24-bit DAC to excite a structure.
