LMS Extends Engineering Facilities with Access to Ford Lommel Proving Grounds

Press Release Date12 Apr 2002

Strenghtens LMS in delivering exhaustive multi-attribute vehicle engineering services

LMS Engineering announces the extension of its offering to its ground vehicle customers with access to the Ford proving ground in Lommel, Belgium. Through its participation in the Flanders’ DRIVE Engineering & Test Center, LMS is creating one of the most extensive automotive engineering and test facilities in Western Europe. Access to The Flanders’ DRIVE center and the adjacent Ford proving grounds represents a strategic extension to LMS Engineering and Test Center in Leuven, Belgium, and furthers the capability of LMS to deliver exhaustive multi-attribute vehicle engineering for NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness), durability, and vehicle dynamics.

At Lommel, customers will have the convenience of using top-flight development and test facilities adjacent to world-class proving grounds. The Ford Lommel grounds cover 2.5 hectares with a 70km track that has a reputation for permitting precise test repeatability. The Engineering Center itself will be equipped for every aspect of vehicle development: CAD design, virtual prototyping capabilities and physical prototype testing and refinement. Dedicated NVH and durability test labs will work in tandem with the proving grounds next door.

By concentrating CAD design, virtual prototyping capabilities, lab testing, and full-scale proving ground testing in one location, LMS will achieve the goal of covering the full development cycle in a single compact location. “Being able to perform simulation, lab testing, and proving-ground testing in one location with a single team of engineers, will allow us to pick the right virtual or physical testing technique for each engineering problem.” stated Dirk De Vis, LMS Vice President Engineering. “The new center at the proving grounds will allow a very tight integration between virtual prototyping and test-based refinement to speed up the development of key performance attributes, such as NVH, Durability and Ride & Handling”.

The new Flanders’ DRIVE Engineering & Test Center at Lommel will house a 6-poster (4+2) test rig, as well as durability rigs for power train / driveline, suspension, and hot-exhaust. There will be multiple durability test rigs for components in a corrosion chamber. LMS will also extend its handling and suspension engineering capability with the availability of a state-of-the-art K&C (Kinematics and Compliance) test rig. The official opening is planned for 2003. Founding members of Flanders’ DRIVE include Bekaert, Bosal, Bosch, Tenneco Automotive, and LMS International.
