Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Selects LMS for New Platform Development Program

Press Release Date28 Nov 2002

LMS gets development responsibility for full-vehicle NVH, durability, ride & handling and cross-attribute optimization

LMS has announced that its Engineering Services Division was recently awarded development responsibility for full-vehicle NVH, durability, ride & handling and cross-attribute optimization for Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s (MMC) next-generation platform. The new platform will be engineered to support a number of variants. As a vehicle intended for markets in Japan, Europe and the USA, a variety of local driving conditions will have an impact on the design and performance attributes.

“Mitsubishi chose LMS because of its proven vehicle development competence and the combination of its best-in-class Test and CAE technologies for performance engineering. MMC would like to develop the new platform with LMS.” said MMC Project Manager, Shozo Kurita. “The goal of the project is to improve the overall performance quality of the platform and to support all of its variants by strategic partnering with LMS.”

The LMS mandate includes doing design evaluations for the variants, ensuring that the multiple upper body variants will perform according to target with respect to NVH and durability work on the single platform. The LMS responsibility starts by guiding the target setting process and will continue through to the final prototype validation.

The Mitsubishi project calls for intense use of virtual prototyping techniques, where test and simulation data are combined to predict the structural behavior of the vehicle, and its functional performance. Dirk De Vis, Vice President LMS Engineering Services says, “LMS has the requisite experience as well as the test and virtual prototyping technologies that MMC will use to reconcile the test model and loads with the virtual models used by each team. LMS will co-develop the new platform with MMC to reliably predict functional performance at both the component and system-levels early enough to positively impact the design throughout the project.”

About LMS Engineering Services

For over twenty years, LMS Engineering Services has been building strong relationships, creating innovative methods and technologies, and setting new standards in product refinement through performance optimization. LMS engineers, using creativity and skill, work with customers to solve their most elusive problems and have often made the difference between successful product launches and costly failures. Experienced in core performance attributes of products; noise and vibration, durability, and motion, the team’s unique balance of skill and engineering judgment turns attribute engineering into a strategic competitive advantage.

The Engineering Services portfolio ranges from engineering methods audits to technology transfer, and from troubleshooting to full responsibility co-development. LMS expertise applies to the full product development cycle: pre-concept, initial design optimization, detailed modeling and predictive analysis, to testing and refining the prototype in the test bay or on the proving ground. Work for the automotive, aerospace and other types of manufacturing industries is carried out in the field, on site, or in one of four LMS Engineering Centers.
